They were surprised because he could've won. He always hold back his power to make sure he fighting someone at their strongest. He could have used his bankai and ended it but he want to see his release form, which was stupid. Now, that put them in a difficult position.

Nah nah, he is way stronger than Renji, even Renji said so, Renji even asked Madarame for help on Bankai cause he was the only person who wasn't a caption or lieutenant who could use bankai.

Yo back in the day he was now he ain't. You yourself saw how other lieutenants beat the fracciones with their shikai only while Ikkaku lost.

Here's a little spoiler: It's later revealed in the manga that ikkaku's bankai was broken after his fight with edorad(The guy he fought in ep119) so He most likely couldn't use it rather than didn't. Also a Broken Bankai can never be fully repaired and in most cases once your Bankai breaks you won't be able to wield your Zanpakuto anymore.

Please use tags! Just like how you break a Shikai, destroy or break the Zanpakuto in a couple of pieces. You know how kenpachi broke Ichigo's zanpakuto during his fight with him just like that a Bankai is also broken. Parts of Renji's Bankai were destroyed by Byakuya during their first fight, By Szayelaporro and those destroyed parts were never restored, I'm talking about the separate fragments of Hihou Zabimaru. Mayuri's Bankai was destroyed by Uryu during their first encounter, But Mayuri never repaired it, he always remodels his Bankai. During Ikkaku's fight with Edorad, after each hit by his Bankai a part of it was broken, Ryuumon Hozukimaru had it's blade completely separated from the hilt and that's how by the end of the fight Ikkaku's bankai was completely destroyed.
